Capstone
on Teaching and Learning Mathematics for Secondary Teachers
(3 semester hours)
The culminating course in the program is a capstone course focused on
a scientific study of teaching and learning mathematics. In this course
students examine vignettes of practice from real classrooms. The course
will use videotapes from the collection developed at University of Missouri-Columbia
(NSF# 9819101), and written case studies developed at the University
of Pittsburgh (COMET: Cases of Mathematics Instruction to Enhance Teaching)
(NSF#9731428). Additionally, classroom data will be
used to develop written case studies. As students study these cases,
they will be asked to analyze
the teacher’s action and mathematical activities of the students.
This course will also address other aspects of teacher preparation such
as unit and lesson planning.
